A few areas of Sarasota County are zoned for horse stables, pastures, and small ranches, but they are usually located in exurban locations closer to the Everglades and quite a few miles east of I-75. Venice Farms is a quiet subdivision where homeowners can find spacious lots ideal for keeping horses in their properties, and they do not have to drive far to visit the beach.
As its name suggests, the land in Venice Farms was previously used for agricultural purposes in the 1920s. Over time, some parcels of land were purchased and zoned for residential use while others were set aside for nature preserves and family farms. These days, this neighborhood is one of the few in Venice where lots are zoned for equestrian activities. A handful of older Florida ranches remain, but most of the properties are large country estates custom-built by local developers; there are even mansions with eight bedrooms built on horse ranches taking up dozens of acres.
To get an idea of the properties in Venice Farms, a 2020 listing for a three-bedroom home with 3.5 bathrooms and nearly 5,000 square feet of interior was listed for less than $1.5 million in October. The stables in this property take up 2,600 square feet, and they have adjacent pastures for horses.
Venice Farms is a perfect neighborhoods for families who enjoy the outdoors. Some of the horse riding trails run along freshwater creeks that flow from the Myakka River. The Sleeping Turtles Preserve is on the eastern boundary of the subdivision, and the nearest section of I-75 will take you to Alligator Alley and the Everglades. Getting to the beaches of Venice and Nokomis will take you about 20 minutes. The Jacaranda Commons shopping center is right on the corner of Venice Avenue and Jacaranda Boulevard, and this is where you can shop at Publix and CVS.
