Located just north of the Rolling Green Golf Club, DeSoto Acres in Sarasota is one of the first subdivisions to define the Southwest Florida suburban lifestyle. Initially zoned in the late 1920s, DeSoto Acres was marketed as an ideal place for home buyers who wanted to plant orchards and keep horses; in 2018, a few properties still feature barns, stables and fenced pasture fields.

DeSoto Acres is less than five miles away from Downtown Sarasota, and yet it feels like an exurban neighborhood thanks to the spacious lots, mature landscaping and generous greenbelt areas. You will not find a home site measuring less than an acre in this subdivision; in fact, an undeveloped lot with 2.14 acres was listed in 2018 for just $60K.

A few homes at Desoto Acres will soon become eligible to enter the National Register of Historic Places. Florida ranch-style homes with five bedrooms and three bathrooms built on more than 2,854 square feet of living space can be negotiated for less than $570K in 2018; we are talking about a remodeled property with a separate guest house sitting on more than two acres of Florida land. Since development is still ongoing in this community, you can find properties completed as early as 2018; a four-bedroom and four-bathroom Mediterranean revival home was listed in September 2018 for $715K.

Despite its countryside ambiance, Desoto Acres is surrounded by suburban convenience. The northern section of the subdivision is adjacent to a shopping district along University Parkway, where you can find a Detwiler’s Farm Market plus a Walmart Supercenter. Nearby family attractions include North Water Tower Park, Longwood Park, Conservatory Park, and the John Ringling Museum of Art. The Mall at University Park Center is less than five miles to the east, and Siesta Key Beach is close enough to visit every weekend.
