There is a certain satisfaction that comes from being a homeowner in Bird Key, which can be explained by reviewing a bit of its history. Along with the neighboring cays of St. Armands and Lido, Bird Key is one of the barrier islands that captured the imagination of American circus magnate John Ringling. However, his dream of transforming the isle into a neighborhood that celebrated the classic residential architecture of the Mediterranean would be cut short by a real estate downturn.
Ownership of Bird Key remained in the Ringling family; by the 1960s, real estate development began in earnest. A little over 500 single-family residences were developed. Beach bungalows evolved into Florida ranch-style homes followed by Key West mansions and elegant Mediterranean-style waterfront estates. These days, Bird Key lives up to John Ringling’s vision of a grand neighborhood complete with a yacht club, tennis courts, a swimming pool, private docks, and some of the best unobstructed views of the Sarasota skyline and the Gulf of Mexico.
Bird Key is a neighborhood that has it all: Plenty of waterfront properties, private docks, gorgeous views, and easy pedestrian access to Downtown Sarasota, the cosmopolitan St. Armands Circle with its chic shops and restaurants, and the famous sugar-white sands of Siesta Key. A favorite pastime by residents is to take a leisure stroll or bike ride to Bayfront Park, the Mary Selby Botanical Gardens or the South Lido County Park.
In a sense, Bird Key is probably one of the most exclusive suburbs of Sarasota County; still, many spectacular homes here are priced well under a million dollars. Available listings are probably not as frequent as house hunters would like them to be, and when they come on the market they tend to sell fast. The neighborhood layout is set up as a private enclave, but Bird Key is not a gated community. This is a community where families can enjoy quality of life and prosperity living next door to retirees and young professionals.
