Vamo in Sarasota is one of those places that will immediately appeal to home buyers looking for neighborhoods with character. This former fishing village is located across from Siesta Key, north of Catfish Creek, and south of the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall; its history dates back to the 1920s, when a few families purchased sections of land originally owned by the late Bertha Palmer, real estate baroness of Southwest Florida.
Most of the original Vamo has been transformed into commercial districts, but the remaining residential section tends to attract buyers who are truly interested in the history of the region. In terms of architectural styles, Vamo is nothing like modern gated communities or tract housing subdivisions that have taken over Sarasota over the last few decades. This is a community where you can find cottages and bungalows originally built before World War II, but you will also find Florida ranch-style homes, Mediterranean mansions and custom-built houses.
Some of the older and cozier Vamo properties sit on large lots surrounded by mature and lush landscaping; if they need remodeling, they can be found listed below $110K. Sporadic development still takes place in Vamo, which is why you can find a three-bedroom and two-bathroom property built in 2011 listed for $315K in late 2018; this is a California ranch-style house complete with designer kitchen, granite counters and a detached studio.
Aside from the historic ambiance, Vamo enjoys the convenience of being located just minutes away from Potter Park, Vamo Drive Park, the Plaza at Palmer Ranch shopping center, the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall, the TPC Prestancia Country Club, and the beaches of Siesta Key. This part of Sarasota does not get as much traffic as the sections closer to the downtown districts; as a result, it is very peaceful and quiet.
